Weekly Message

Careblazer,

Let’s clear up some common confusion about dementia.

Dementia isn’t actually a diagnosis even though we talk about it in that way.

Dementia is a condition.

And there are many different types of dementia.

For example some of the most common types include: Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia, Vascular Dementia, and Frontotemporal Dementia.

It’s similar to how people use the word cancer.

Cancer isn’t actually a specific diagnosis.

It’s a condition and there are many different types.

Those specific types = specific diagnosis.

For example: breast cancer, lung cancer, Leukemia, etc.

Sometimes, the healthcare providers will know what type of dementia someone has pretty quickly.

Other times the healthcare providers won’t know and it will require more tests, experts, and time.

In cases where they are unsure of the type of dementia, they may refer to it as “Dementia Unspecified” or “Dementia of unknown etiology.”

Actually getting a specific dementia diagnosis can be quite difficult and complicated because dementia isn’t diagnosed by something like a simple blood test or head scan. There’s a lot of moving pieces that go into getting an official diagnosis.

More on that in a later Dementia Dose.

The most important takeaway from today’s email is that whenever you hear the word dementia, it means the person has a condition that impacts the brain AND body, and that it often comes with many challenges – regardless of the specific type.
